On February 28th in New York, at the GCMUN (Global Citizens Model United Nations) awards ceremony, when the name "Zhao Shuqi" was called for the "Honorable Mention" award, 15-year-old Siyona initially thought it was just the routine presentation of participation certificates.

It wasn't until the cheers erupted from the audience that she realized – as one of only four Chinese delegates present, she had brought back the sole individual award from this competition, which involved over 15,000 students globally.
As a member of the first graduating class of Teensen Primary School, progressing through its middle school, and now a Grade 10 student in the bilingual class, Siyona embarked on this New York journey with a full scholarship, step by step making the voice of a Chinese youth heard on the world stage.
But more worth exploring than the award itself is: How did a 15-year-old girl manage to remain composed and eventually stand on the podium after sudden illness in a foreign land, the despair of losing her data, and the challenges of language and cultural differences?
The answer lies in her moments of repeatedly "getting back up," in her unquenchable curiosity about the world, and in the careful nurturing from her family and school.

Setback as Opportunity: The Awakening of Resilience
The journey to the US began with challenges. The original flight was canceled due to a blizzard in New York. After rebooking and finally arriving, she suddenly fell ill with vomiting and diarrhea on the first day – an experience she had never had before.

"Vomiting in the bathroom early in the morning, I felt quite desperate," Siyona admitted to her moment of collapse. "I wondered if my dream city and I were simply incompatible."
Siyona

But she didn't tell her family – "Bringing it up at that critical moment wouldn't solve anything, it would only worry them more." So she endured it alone. After a steaming hot bowl of beef noodles at noon, she regained her strength and showed up at the UN venue on time.

During preparation, her data documents were accidentally lost. "I panicked for 10 minutes, then reorganized the core content from memory. Surprisingly, the logic became even clearer."
This ability to recover quickly from difficulties and transform setbacks into opportunities for growth is the core of "resilience." It is not a talent but a psychological toughness internalized through countless experiences of falling and getting back up.
As the principal of Teensen Primary School, Siyona's mother, Ms. Yang, has a self-deprecating label for her parenting style: "lazy mom."

Siyona
"Ever since she got her own suitcase, she has packed for trips herself. At first, she would forget things. After forgetting enough times, she thought, 'Hey, maybe I should make a list?'" Thus, the habit of making memos naturally developed.
For her solo trip to the US at 15, her family gave her full trust. "I rarely called her. During the competition days, our chat history was less than 400 words, mostly reminding her to 'take more videos'."

Principal Yang's "laziness" is a high-level "trust through letting go." She believes that only through real choices and trial and error can a child truly grow into their own person.
Principal Yang said: "Many children don't know how to make their own decisions because they've never been allowed to." This statement reveals a often overlooked truth: Overprotection by parents, seemingly an act of love, actually deprives children of the chance to engage with the real world. When we clear all obstacles for our children, we also unknowingly remove the stepping stones for their growth. The real world is not always gentle: flights can be canceled, bodies can get sick, data can be lost, and difficulties can come one after another. These are not accidents in growth; they are growth itself.
This is also the core philosophy of Teensen Primary School's nature education – respecting every child, giving them enough trust, and believing they can do better. Another gift of nature education is that while letting go, it also safeguards a child's innate curiosity. When they see the unknown not as a danger but as a landscape worth exploring, curiosity is not overshadowed by fear.

The School's Soil: Letting Resilience Grow in Respect and Love
From primary through high school, what kind of nourishment did Teensen give Siyona?
"Teensen places great emphasis on language cultivation, but we also complete group projects, reports, presentations, and debates in English... These activities trained our logical thinking, critical thinking, and integration skills." Siyona recalls that it was precisely this daily training that equipped her not only with a language foundation but also with the ability for deep thinking and expression at the MUN conference.

Siyona
The school's support for international competitions was also crucial. "When I first participated in CCMUN in December 2024, the school invited the European and American Youth Education Exchange Group to our school for communication . We all had a great time with our American friends."

Opportunities to speak on stage and cross-cultural interactions, time and again, gradually cultivated in her the qualities of composure, confidence, and ease in front of others.

Siyona
Principal Yang stated frankly: "Teensen's greatest characteristic is respecting every child and creating a loving environment. If every parent could cooperate with the school's nature education philosophy, every child could become the next Siyona – sunny, positive, confident, and possessing problem-solving skills."
If resilience enables her to get up after falling, then curiosity ensures she never really falls into panic and anxiety when facing the unknown.
Looking back on the entire trip to the US, problems kept arising – each one enough to overwhelm a 15-year-old. Yet, when Siyona describes these experiences, her tone lacks complaint; instead, it carries a unique sense of calm and even excitement.

Siyona
Why? Because she treated it all as an experience to "see the world."
"What attracts me most to MUN is that it allows me to integrate into a broader world. We can meet more people – across classes, schools, regions, cultures, and races – listen to more diverse ideas, and discuss them." Even before departure, Siyona was full of anticipation for this New York trip – not just hoping for an award, but eager to encounter the unknown.

Siyona
It was this curiosity that prevented her from being consumed by fear when she fell ill. She felt a moment of despair in the bathroom, but soon a thought emerged: "It'll be fine once I get to the UN." She wanted to know what the UN headquarters really looked like, what perspectives delegates from around the world would bring, and whether she could make her voice heard on this platform.

This curiosity became her motivation to "get back up."
It was this curiosity that allowed her to adjust within just 10 minutes after losing her data. She didn't dwell in self-pity, asking "why does this always happen to me?" Instead, she quickly shifted to exploring "how can I do this even better?" The new document had clearer logic – this wasn't accidental, but the openness a curious person maintains even in difficulty.
It was this curiosity that enabled her, in the UN General Assembly hall surrounded by foreign participants, to calmly admit she was "nervous," yet still say, "Just do it."

"The UN is a platform willing to hear all voices" – she believed this because she longed to be heard, but even more, she longed to hear others.
Curiosity allows one to step beyond self-centered limitations, beyond the fear of failure, beyond anxiety about the unknown. It transforms every difficult situation into an opportunity for exploration; every setback into a chance for learning. Siyona showed everyone just how powerful "the power of curiosity" can be.
05.
Standing on the World Stage: "So I Can Do It Too"
The moment she stepped into the UN General Assembly hall, Siyona's awe was real. "It was truly amazing, surrounded entirely by foreign participants. I was a bit worried about whether the afternoon discussions would go smoothly, but it was okay, just do it."

I have already tried my best,也和朋友相谈甚欢,就足够啦。"
Compared to native speakers, she had a clear self-awareness. "Everyone was so at ease. For example, one delegate started every speech with a humorous Italian opening, instantly grabbing everyone's attention. In such a formal academic setting, I couldn't be that effortlessly skillful. But I have already tried my best, and I had great conversations with friends, that's enough."
After the initial "surprise" and "excitement" of receiving the award, Siyona said the biggest takeaway wasn't the certificate, but a feeling – "So I can do it too."

"So I can do it too" – these five words are a young girl's affirmation of her own abilities after facing challenges and overcoming difficulties. They are also the fruit nurtured by resilience and curiosity together: she not only proved she could handle adversity but also discovered the vastness of the world and her own potential.
06.
Courage, Letting the World Hear Her
Driven by this curiosity, combined with the abilities and confidence cultivated daily at school, she was brought to the UN conference, where she also faced her biggest challenge – courage.
"In the conference room, it was just me and three other Chinese friends; everyone else was a native English speaker." In the first session, Siyona admitted she felt timid. "I was a bit afraid to communicate with delegates from other countries."

You wanna come? "
But she didn't retreat. She first wrote a small note, intending to pass it to a delegate who seemed highly cooperative. Just as she mustered the courage to step forward and speak, a delegate nearby said to her in an extremely enthusiastic tone, "You wanna come?"
"Wow, I was so touched at that moment," Siyona recalled with a smile. Taking the cue, she successfully joined the discussion. Everyone listened attentively to her ideas, offered suggestions, revised together, and turned the consensus into formal clauses for the draft resolution. "We talked for a long time after the session ended; we really hit it off famously."

The rewards of this courage went even further. At the social event, she saw everyone's "let-loose" side. "Many people proactively came to talk to me, complimented my makeup or outfit, and by the end, we were exchanging contact information."

When they learned she was from China, many were very surprised, saying they thought she was a local. "This actually gave me a lot of confidence and made me even more willing to speak up."
China is a really great country. If you guys come over, I'll definitely show you everywhere.'"
And what made Siyona most proud was seizing every opportunity to introduce her country to the world. "In all the conversations, I said a thousand times, 'China is a really great country. If you guys come over, I'll definitely show you everywhere.'"
At that moment, she was not just a participant, but also a little cultural ambassador. Throughout the process, she was filled with a sense of achievement and genuine joy.

Resilience and Curiosity: The Best Armor for Children
In an era that only teaches children how to succeed, but rarely teaches them how to face failure, Siyona's story offers a different answer:
More important than the "courage to win" is the tenacity to "not fear losing"; more critical than IQ or EQ is the "adversity quotient" when facing setbacks; and more precious than any skill is that unquenchable curiosity – it allows one to break free from the bonds of fear, turning every difficulty into a landscape, every fall into an exploration.
This ability requires the wisdom of families to "let go," the soil of "respect" from schools, and most importantly, the child's own process of internalizing setbacks into nutrients for growth through countless times of falling and getting back up.
As Siyona said: "As long as you have the ability and courage to get back up, difficulties are not scary."
In this uncertain AI era, perhaps the best armor we can give our children is not a paved path, but the resilience to "get back up," and that everlasting curiosity to "want to go and see."
