On February 28th, when the conditional offer (with reduced conditions) and pre-admission without an interview from the University of the Arts London (UAL) arrived, Annie, a 2026 graduate of the Teensen Bilingual Classes, was stunned.

"I really couldn't believe it," Annie said. "The portfolios other people show off look so sophisticated, everyone seems so artistically talented… but I'm not like that."

Two years ago, she was a "complete beginner" who didn't even dare to do layouts, her hand-drawing skills were "hard to look at," and she had received no professional training whatsoever.

She was also a fangirl who gave her teachers headaches – to attend her idol's concert, she would book the flight first and ask for permission afterward, happily enduring the scolding. Her teachers said she was "ungrounded," and she accepted that label.

Yet, this "ungrounded" girl not only secured an unconditional academic offer from Kingston University – with the admissions officer praising in her acceptance letter: "The analysis of the color systems corresponding to different Chinese cultural symbols demonstrates a very strong ability for systematic thinking." – she also received a rare conditional offer without an interview from UAL.

Some are curious: what kind of "genius" could garner such favor from UAL?

There is no "heroic" narrative here; what unfolds is a more authentic Annie. The difficulties, setbacks, confusion, and anxiety that everyone might face… she has faced them all.

The difference is, she found her own way to solve them, in her own way.

01.

Can Fangirling Lead to the World's Top University?

Before coming to Teensen, Annie's art foundation was practically zero. Like most people, her art learning experience was limited to children's painting classes as a kid. She jokes, "I'm the type who gets enthusiastic for three minutes. Ballet, piano, bel canto… I tried them all, and gave them all up."

So why did she stick with art?

"Because I like it," she said. "I love the album design and music video visuals of Korean groups. I want to do this in the future."

This passion has deeper roots. Annie's mother liked making beaded jewelry. Since childhood, Annie watched her mother turn beads into bracelets and put them on her. "I initially wanted to study jewelry design, but then I got into fangirling and shifted to visual communication."

At Teensen, the teachers didn't dismiss fangirling as "ungrounded"; instead, they saw the passion behind it. Ms. Coco, head of the art department, said, "Several kids chose art and design because of fangirling. Traditional parents might see it as a waste of time, but with proper guidance, passion is the best teacher."

In her application personal statement, Annie wrote about this experience – how fangirling ignited her desire for visual communication.

Those Who Can "Sit Still" Are Always Lucky

Many people think art is all about "unbridled imagination and sudden inspiration," not requiring diligent accumulation, only talent. But Ms. Coco sees it differently:"In the Heru Art Department, students aren't necessarily those who have drawn since childhood or have the most mature skills. They are definitely the ones with the most passion, the greatest willingness to experiment, and the boldness to express their ideas. The real secret is doing the 'simplest' things together with classmates, enduring hardship, sitting still on the cold bench, and accumulating step by step to reach a thousand miles."

Annie

Annie is exactly that type who can "sit still."

Her Grade 12 supervising teacher remembers that when Annie first joined the art department, she was afraid to even write words on the page, worried about making mistakes. But she was willing to revise repeatedly and patiently refine her work.

"She's not a genius who gets it immediately, but she's very obedient and willing to revise over and over," said Ms. Mika, her teacher. "When she came back from the winter break in Grade 11, she submitted the most pages, all completed independently. Suddenly, her layouts developed their own style."

This ability to "sit still" wasn't innate. Where other kids might give up when facing difficulties, she chose a slower, more arduous path: trying repeatedly, asking questions repeatedly, and revising repeatedly.

"I'm pretty thick-skinned; I don't compare myself much with others. If I can't figure something out, I go to the teacher. I do what the teacher suggests, and if I make a mistake, I start over," Annie said.

Over 300 Pages of Accumulation Led to a 20-Page Blossoming

When applying to overseas top schools, the most important thing for art students is the portfolio. And a portfolio is only about 20 pages long. Many students focus solely on these 20 pages, opting not to do things that "aren't directly tested" on the application.

But Teensen students are different.

"Behind our students' 20-page portfolios, there's at least 300-400 pages of accumulated work," Ms. Coco said.

This accumulation starts from Grade 10. From the most basic research, hand-drawing, and software operation, to mind mapping, artist studies, and material experiments – every step leaves a trace.

Annie's portfolio revolves almost entirely around traditional Chinese culture – traditional patterns, ancient clothing, and the color red. She enjoys watching period dramas. A prop in the drama "Fangs of Fortune" captivated her, prompting her to research its historical origins, color systems, and cultural implications, eventually transforming that research into her own design language.

What the admissions officer saw was precisely this ability to "start from passion and delve deep." Her analysis of the colors of Chinese cultural symbols revealed a unique systematicity – that "very strong ability for systematic thinking" was the natural manifestation of over 300 pages of groundwork.

Stable Mentality Comes from Having a Support System

Annie

Annie has another trait: her mentality is incredibly stable.

Did she break down when hitting bottlenecks in her portfolio? "No. If I can't figure it out, I go chat with the teacher, then get back to work." She describes herself as carefree and quick to forget unpleasant things. Teacher Hu confirmed with a smile: "She never really broke down. At most, she'd be troubled for a little while, then solve the problem while playfully complaining."

This stability stems from a sense of security – knowing that no matter what difficulties she faces, her teachers are there for her.

In the Heru Art Department, every student has a one-on-one tutor. From Grade 10 to 12, teachers spend time with students almost every day. Annie said, "Whenever I feel anxious, I go to my teachers. They tell me, 'Don't worry, these are all small things.'"

Someone guides you when you're confused, someone supports you when you're vulnerable. In the open and inclusive environment of Teensen, Annie's unique artistic seed finally sprouted.

Making Every "Ordinary Child" Visible

From a beginner afraid to even layout a page, to creating a portfolio that earned a reduced-offer admission from UAL – it took only two and a half years.

Behind this is the comprehensive planning of the Heru Art Department. From the day students enroll, Ms. Coco creates detailed plans for them – when to take which courses, when to start the portfolio, when to submit applications. Every milestone is clear.

More importantly, this planning isn't assembly-line style. Teachers know each student's characteristics, interests, and weaknesses inside out. Annie likes traditional culture, so teachers encouraged her to delve deeper. She has a stable mentality but is forgetful, so teachers remind her repeatedly.

"What we do isn't mold students into our image, but help them find their own," Ms. Coco said.

Last year, the Heru Art Department's application success rate for the University of the Arts London was 100%, all direct undergraduate admissions without interviews.

Annie's story isn't a tale of genius. It's the story of an ordinary girl who, in two and a half years, walked a seemingly impossible path.

She doesn't have innate talent, but she has passion. She didn't have a foundation, but she can sit still. She lacked confidence, but her teachers believed in her.

The admission letter from the University of the Arts London isn't an endpoint, but a passport to a world of more possibilities.
